Since iOS 26, iPhone owners can turn on Call Screening, which answers calls from numbers that are not in their contacts and asks the caller for their name and reason for calling before the phone rings. It works in New Zealand. For a business, that means a callback to a new customer may be answered by their phone, not by them. The fix is to say who you are and why you are ringing in one clear sentence, to make your number easy to save, and to need fewer callbacks in the first place.
What iPhone Call Screening does
Apple's iPhone User Guide describes it this way: Call Screening "automatically answers calls from unknown numbers without interrupting you", and once the caller shares their name and reason for calling, the iPhone rings and shows the response so the owner can decide whether to pick up.
The setting is in Settings, then Apps, then Phone, under Screen Unknown Callers. There are three choices:
| Setting | What happens when your business rings from an unsaved number |
|---|---|
| Never | The phone rings as normal. |
| Ask Reason for Calling | The iPhone answers for the owner and asks your name and why you are calling. Your answer is shown to them, then the phone rings. |
| Silence | The call is silenced, sent to voicemail and listed in Recents. |
Apple's support article on managing unknown callers is clear about who counts as unknown: "phone numbers that aren't saved in your contacts". That is your business, for every new customer.
Is it available in New Zealand?
Yes. Apple's iOS feature availability page lists English (New Zealand) under Phone: Call Screening. The option appears in Apple's user guide from iOS 26 onwards and is not in the iOS 18 guide. It is a setting each owner chooses. We have no figures on how many New Zealand iPhone owners have turned it on, and we would be wary of anyone who claims to. What matters is that you cannot tell from your end, so it pays to make every callback ready for it.
Android phones have screening and spam features of their own, which vary by phone maker and country. The advice below works for those too.
Seven ways to get your callbacks through
1. Have your one sentence ready
When the automated voice asks who is calling, the customer reads what you say as text and decides quickly. Give your name, your business and the reason, in that order, and tie the reason to something they did: "Sam from Harbour Electrical, returning your call about the heat pump quote." Speak plainly and a little slower than usual, because your words are being transcribed.
2. Do not hang up
A caller who hangs up when screened looks exactly like a spam caller. Answer the question, then wait. The owner may pick up partway through.
3. Leave a voicemail that can stand on its own
If the customer uses Silence, your call goes to voicemail. Say who you are, what it is about, when you will try again, and the number to ring. "It's Sam, call me back" gives them no reason to.
4. Text before you ring
A short text from the number you are about to call from is not caught by call screening, and it puts a name next to your number: "Hi, Sam from Harbour Electrical here. I will ring you in five minutes about your heat pump quote." Some phones filter messages from unknown senders too, so treat this as a help and not a guarantee.
5. Make your number easy to save
Apple's own advice to iPhone owners is to add important numbers to Contacts so those calls always come through. Help your customers do that. Put the number you ring from in booking confirmations and email signatures, and ask new customers to save it when they first book.
6. Ring from a number they will recognise
If customers ring your office line and you ring back from a personal mobile, they are seeing a number they have never seen before. Where you can, call back from the number they dialled, or tell them which number to expect. Avoid withholding your number, since a private number gives the customer nothing to go on.
7. Tell callers when and how you will ring back
People pick up calls they are expecting. Whoever takes the first call, whether it is you, a staff member or an AI receptionist, should finish with "Sam will ring you back this afternoon from a number ending 4417."
The better fix: fewer callbacks
Every callback is now a second chance to miss each other. The customer rang when it suited them. You ring back when it suits you, their phone screens you, and the job goes to whoever they reached first.
That is the case for answering the first call properly, even when you cannot do it yourself. An AI receptionist picks up while the customer is still on the line, answers the questions it can from your knowledge base, takes the job details, and can book a time if you connect a calendar. When a callback is still needed, such as for a quote, it can tell the caller who will ring and roughly when, which is tip seven done for you. Our guide to how AI call answering works walks through a call step by step.
It is fair to say what it does not change. If you ring a customer back from an unsaved number, their iPhone may still screen you. An AI receptionist reduces how often you need to make that call. It does not get you past the screen.
Should you turn Call Screening on for your own business phone?
Think carefully if new customers ring that phone. Every new customer is an unsaved number, so every one of them will be asked to explain themselves to an automated voice before you see the call. Some will answer it. Others will not bother, and will try the next business. Apple's support article also notes that calls are not screened while you are roaming, and that screening switches off for 24 hours after you call emergency services.
It also helps to be clear about what the feature is. iPhone Call Screening asks for a name and a reason, and that is all. It does not answer questions about your services, take a full message, book a job or transfer an urgent call. It is a filter for the phone's owner, not a receptionist for the business.
| iPhone Call Screening | AI receptionist | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | The phone's owner, to avoid unwanted calls | The business, to look after its callers |
| What the caller is asked | Name and reason for calling | Whatever you need for the job |
| Answers questions about your business | No | Yes, from your knowledge base |
| Books appointments | No | Yes, with a connected calendar |
| Handles calls when you cannot look at your phone | No, it waits for you to decide | Yes |
| Cost | Included with the iPhone | Free tier, then from $49 a month on KiwiAgent |
If spam is the problem on your business mobile, the Silence and spam filtering options are blunt tools that also catch customers. A better split is to keep your personal number private and screened, and give customers a business number that is always answered, by you when you can and by an agent when you cannot. Here is how to divert unanswered calls on Spark, One NZ and 2degrees.
